Layer 6 - Remediation/Recovery

More About Level 6 - REMEDIATION/RECOVERY

Let’s discuss Layer 6, which is our remediation and recovery layer. This layer is important because it’s not a matter of if — but when — you will be compromised. It could be something as simple as an account takeover of one of your kids’ Instagram accounts or something more significant like a takeover of your online bank account, which is very unlikely.

No matter the compromise, it is important to have Layers 1 – 5 prepared and to know what you will do in the event of a compromise. At Redegades, we help families every day. Most families never thought they were going to be compromised.

When that compromise happens, one of the biggest challenges families have is that they have no plan for remediation or recovery. Planning for emergencies is important. Not having a plan for recovery and remediation is like having a fire in your home with no plan of escape. Do you remember the big push in the 1980s to develop a fire escape plan for families? Families who prepared for fires have a better chance for survival. I remember my family practicing our fire escape plan. We crawled on our hands and knees and got out of the house.

Just as families prepare for fires, they must also prepare a plan for remediation and recovery in the event of a cybersecurity compromise. For example, let’s say your phone has been compromised. You’ve been locked out of your phone by threat actors, cyber criminals, or hackers. Who are you going to call first? Are you calling your banker, your investment person, your spouse, or your work?

What’s the plan? Are you going to change your passwords? How are you going to change your passwords? What passwords are you going to change? What order are you going to do all these steps?

There’s so much to think about. How are you going to recover the data on that phone? What are you going to use for a phone? For most of us, if we didn’t have a phone for one day, that’d be a real problem. Do you have a backup phone ready to go?

What’s your recovery plan? What’s your remediation plan? Which cybersecurity professional are you going to work with on your remediation and recovery? And you do need a professional —just like you need a professional if your car breaks down or your air conditioner or heater breaks.

You need to think this through and come up with a plan. We offer a workshop to help with this, and we also offer worksheets online to give you a template for developing your plan. When it comes to remediation and recovery, timing and speed are essential. That’s why it’s important to develop a plan in advance.

Once you have a plan for remediation and recovery, we encourage you to review the first five layers and make sure that you are taking your monitoring and auditing seriously.

Join one of our workshops for more information. We’d love to engage with you and make sure you have everything set up properly. At Redegades, we are here to protect your family and secure your future.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS ON THE 7 LAYERS OF MATURITY

Unfortunately, it is not a matter of if — but when — you will be compromised. Being prepared is critical.

LAYER 7
EDUCATION

Using what you've learned in layers 0-6, it is important to increase your security posture with additional education for our families.
